SEGiS GAIN CRUCIAL SKILLS AT WRITING AND COPYRIGHT WORKSHOP

SEGi College Sarawak’s Faculty of Creative Arts Design and Information Technology, and Faculty of Education and Social Sciences, recently hosted a transformative workshop on academic writing and creative works copyrights. The workshop aimed to equip students with essential skills and knowledge, making it an enlightening and empowering experience. Led by Dayang Norsheila Binti Abang Mohtar and her manager, Wan Abdul Rahman bin Wan Bujang from Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Rahman Ya’kub (PeTARY) at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), the workshop covered crucial aspects of referencing and copyright.

The workshop comprised two sessions. In the morning, Dayang Norsheila focused on academic writing referencing, exploring citation styles, paraphrasing techniques, and the importance of avoiding plagiarism. Interactive discussions and practical exercises provided students with a deeper understanding of integrating proper referencing into their academic work.

The afternoon session delved into the complexities of creative works copyrights. Dayang Norsheila guided students through understanding intellectual property rights and navigating licensing agreements. Through case studies and real-world examples, participants learned the significance of respecting copyrights in both academic and professional contexts.

This event actively engaged students with referencing protocols and copyright laws, bridging theory with practice. Participants learned not only the “how” but also the “why” behind proper referencing and copyright compliance. The workshop fostered a culture of academic integrity and ethical conduct among students, laying a strong foundation for their future endeavours.

With approximately 40 students in attendance, the workshop left a lasting impact. Armed with newfound knowledge and skills, students are better equipped to navigate the complexities of academic writing and creative expression. The workshop also catalysed ongoing discussions and initiatives aimed at promoting awareness of referencing and copyrights across campus.

Looking ahead, the Faculty of Creative Arts Design and Information Technology and the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences remain committed to providing opportunities for students to enhance their academic and professional competencies. By continuing to integrate workshops, seminars, and resources on referencing and copyrights into the curriculum, SEGi aims to empower students for success in their academic pursuits and beyond.

The Academic Writing and Creative Works Copyrights Workshop was a significant step towards fostering a culture of academic excellence and ethical conduct. As students apply their newfound knowledge, they embody the values of integrity, responsibility, and respect for intellectual property. Through collaborative efforts and ongoing education, SEGi continues its journey to empower students for success, aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education).
