SEGians Dive into AI-Powered Smart Cities

Imagine a world where smart cities effortlessly optimise energy consumption, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Where precision agriculture ensures abundant harvests while minimising environmental impact. Where AI-driven climate modeling helps us predict and mitigate the effects of climate change, safeguarding vulnerable communities and ecosystems.

Smart cities, sustainable agriculture, and climate resilience – these are not just futuristic concepts but tangible possibilities within our reach, thanks to the power of AI (Artificial Intelligence).

This was the vision of the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2024.

At the heart of Borneo, within the bustling halls of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), a wave of innovation was unleashed. This year’s IDECS conference, themed “AI Navigating a Greener and Circular Future,” drew in global leaders and tech enthusiasts, including a cohort of 20 eager students and 2 dedicated lecturers from SEGi College Sarawak’s IT faculties.

SEGi College Sarawak’s Commitment to Sustainability

However, IDECS was more than just a showcase of technology; it was a catalyst for connection. SEGi College forged valuable links with prominent tech companies like Kintone, SAINS, Alibaba Cloud, AWS, Impact Business Solutions, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC), Sarawak Multimedia Authority, Sarawak Microelectronics Design, TwinMatrix (Singapore), and Arc Technologies, paving the way for future collaborations and potential internship opportunities for students.

Why AI-Driven Sustainability Matters

The urgency of addressing environmental challenges cannot be overstated.

Climate change, resource depletion, and pollution threaten the delicate balance of our planet and the well-being of future generations. While governments and organisations play a crucial role in driving sustainable development, individual actions also matter. By embracing sustainable practices in our daily lives and supporting the development and implementation of AI-powered solutions, we can collectively contribute to a greener future.

AI has the potential to empower individuals to make more sustainable choices. From smart home devices that optimise energy consumption to apps that promote eco-friendly transportation and consumption habits, AI can help us reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable world.

The responsibility for protecting our planet rests on all of us, so let’s make our efforts count.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):

  • SDG 9 Industry, Innovation, and infrastructure
  • SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production

SEGi College Sarawak’s participation in IDECS 2024 exemplifies its dedication to these goals and its commitment to equipping students with the knowledge and skills to contribute to a more sustainable future.
