SEGi PREPARES STUDENTS FOR REAL-WORLD DISASTER SCENARIOS

Diploma in Healthcare students at SEGi College Sarawak recently participated in an impactful talk focused on Emergency Response, specifically geared towards handling disasters. Delivered by Chew Kim Soon, Chairman of the Disaster Management and Humanitarian Support Committee, Malaysia Red Crescent Sarawak Chapter, this essential session aimed to prepare students for the unpredictable nature of disasters, emphasising the importance of readiness and swift action in such scenarios.

The talk provided a comprehensive overview of disaster response protocols, equipping students with the knowledge needed to manage various types of emergencies effectively. The primary objective was to familiarise students with the different phases of disaster management, including preparedness, response, and recovery. By understanding these phases, students could better anticipate and react to the unique challenges posed by natural and man-made disasters. Key topics covered included risk assessment, resource management, and the coordination of emergency services.

Students had the opportunity to engage in an interactive Q&A session, allowing them to ask questions and seek clarification on various aspects of disaster response. This exchange fostered a deeper understanding of the topics discussed and encouraged active participation and engagement among students. The interactive nature of the session enhanced the learning experience, making it more dynamic and impactful.

The talk underscored the vital role that healthcare professionals play in disaster situations. Students were reminded that their ability to remain calm, organised, and efficient can make a significant difference in the outcome of a disaster response. This session aimed to instill a sense of responsibility and urgency, encouraging students to continually improve their disaster preparedness skills throughout their careers.
