SEGi College Sarawak’s Leo Club demonstrated a powerful spirit of community care with their recent food donation drive, held in collaboration with the Lions Club of Kota Sentosa and Sg. Tapang Leo Club on 28 January 2024. Amidst the joyful celebrations of Chinese New Year, approximately 10 dedicated Leos gathered at the Kenyalang Park Community Association to distribute essential food items to those in need. This initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable communities, aligning with SEGi’s commitment to fostering empathy and social responsibility among its students.
The event was graced by the support of YB Wilfred Yap and the Lions Club of Kota Sentosa. The distribution of Angpow to senior citizens by Chairman Kapitan Lion Chong Nam Fah added to the festive spirit, representing prosperity and goodwill. Each Leo helper also received an Angpow, in appreciation of their invaluable contributions, showcasing a strong sense of unity and appreciation among the community.
SEGi Leo Club’s active involvement in this charity initiative highlights SEGi’s ethos of nurturing socially responsible leaders who are prepared to engage meaningfully with society. The food donation drive was a testament to SEGi’s dedication to holistic education—one that goes beyond academics to instil values of compassion, leadership, and community service.
According to the United Nations, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires active participation from communities, institutions, and young leaders. This event, focusing on SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), directly contributes to reducing hunger and fostering inclusive support systems within marginalised communities (source: United Nations).
The event was not only a gesture of care but also an educational experience, allowing SEGi students to learn the importance of empathy in real-life settings. According to the World Bank, community engagement initiatives are essential in equipping students with the skills required to become future-ready, empathetic leaders (source: World Bank). By leading such initiatives, SEGi College Sarawak reaffirms its role as an institution committed to academic excellence, as well as social impact.
The SEGi Leo Club’s success in this endeavour underscores SEGi’s vision of contributing to a better society. It sets an example for how educational institutions can play an integral role in creating positive social change. As SEGi continues to cultivate leaders who not only excel academically but also contribute to community welfare, the college’s students are poised to become true global citizens who make a difference.
