Numerous non-governmental organizations and private companies gathered at the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) for the Kuching Autistic Association (KAA) Food Fair Fundraising 2024 event. This vibrant community effort aimed to raise funds for KAA’s annual operational costs of RM1.2 million and other essential needs. Among the 10 helpers were dedicated members from SEGi College Sarawak’s Leo Club, St. Joseph’s Private School, and the Lions Club of Kota Sentosa, all contributing to the event’s success.
The event, which ran from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, was marked by the presence of distinguished guests, including Yang Berhormat Datuk Amar Prof. Dato Sri Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier of Sarawak and the territory’s Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government, and YB Billy Sujang (GPS). During their visit, they presented a certificate of appreciation at the SEGi food stall, highlighting the collaborative spirit and dedication of all participants.
Featuring 80 stalls, the fair offered a diverse range of ready-to-eat food, drinks, dry food, arts and crafts products, and ‘preloved’ items. SEGi Leo members actively promoted food and beverage items, achieving a complete sell-out by 11 am. The lively atmosphere was further enhanced by stage performances from volunteer dance groups and guest singers, drawing enthusiastic crowds and fostering a sense of community engagement.
SEGi’s participation in the KAA Food Fair underscores its commitment to social responsibility and community involvement. By supporting this fundraising effort, SEGi not only helps sustain essential services for individuals with autism but also exemplifies the importance of civic engagement and volunteerism among its students and staff.
Globally, around 1 in 160 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), highlighting the need for continued support and resources for affected families (World Health Organization, 2021). Events like the KAA Food Fair are crucial in raising awareness and funds to meet these needs. SEGi’s involvement demonstrates a proactive approach in contributing to societal well-being and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in promoting good health and well-being, quality education, and reduced inequalities.
Participants left the event with a profound sense of accomplishment and a deeper understanding of the impact of their contributions. By fostering a culture of compassion and action, SEGi continues to set a high standard in community engagement, preparing students to become leaders who are not only academically proficient but also socially conscious.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
3 Good Health and Well-being
4 Quality Education
10 Reduced Inequalities
