A group of 30 law students and four lecturers from the Faculty of Law at SEGi embarked on an academic trip to the prestigious Malaysian Bar in Kuala Lumpur. The visit aimed to provide valuable insights into the Malaysian Bar’s workings and acquaint the students with the legal profession. The Malaysian Bar, known for its commitment to justice through law, plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding the rights of citizens.
Upon their arrival at the Malaysian Bar’s headquarters on Leboh Pasar Besar, the SEGi delegation was warmly welcomed by Sunil Lopez, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, and Ariff Erzanie Ramli, the Executive Officer (CPD) of the Malaysian Bar. The students were then escorted to the auditorium, where they had the privilege of attending a briefing and presentation by Lopez and Ariff.
During the informative session, Ariff Erzanie provided a comprehensive overview of the Malaysian Bar’s operations. He highlighted the institution’s various Bar committees, programs, and NGO service initiatives. Notably, one event that captured the students’ interest was the “Walk,” which aims to defend the judiciary against intimidation and arbitrary procedures by enforcement agencies. Additionally, they learned about the “LAC Walk-in Clinic,” which provides legal services and advice to underprivileged citizens.
The students had the opportunity to engage in a stimulating question-and-answer session with Sunil Lopez. They eagerly inquired about potential career pathways within the Malaysian Bar Council. In a moment that sparked excitement, Lopez politely invited SEGi students to undergo practical legal training at the Bar Council. This invaluable experience would offer them early exposure to legal work and enable them to explore potential future careers.
The visit concluded after nearly two hours, leaving the students with a profound learning experience that transcended traditional classroom teaching methods. The trip provided them with unique networking opportunities and encouraged them to contemplate their future career paths in law.
This educational outing showcased SEGi’s commitment to providing its law students with practical exposure and highlighted the importance of institutions like the Malaysian Bar in shaping future legal professionals. The visit deepened the students’ understanding of the legal profession, fostering a sense of enthusiasm and inspiration within them.
