SEGi College Sarawak connects with industry partners

Students of SEGi College Sarawak’s Diploma in Hotel Management and Diploma in Tourism Management recently fulfilled the assessment requirement for Event and Convention Management when they organised and conducted an event called the “Networking Session 2022” in collaboration with the Aspiring Hospitality Club on 17 July 2022 at Imperial Hotel Kuching.

The event’s purpose was to provide the students with the opportunity to experience real-life situations and gain knowledge and skills in organising an event. Seventeen students were involved in this event as a committee under the guidance of three lecturers, Dayangku Khairunnisa, Gregory Poh, and Perseus Giter.

Each student held positions such as Event Director, Assistant Event Director, Secretary, Treasurer, and committee member. They chose the theme of White, Cream, and Black and decorated the hall accordingly. They were given two weeks plus to plan and organise the event. They developed interpersonal communication, decision-making, creativity, and leadership skills throughout this time. They also gained experience in marketing skills to promote the event using various marketing tools such as social media, word-of-mouth, and poster advertising.

The event started with welcoming remarks by the emcee, followed by a prayer recital and speeches by the Head of Academics of SEGi College Sarawak, Mr Rudy Ujang, and the Event Director, Awangku Iskandar Zulqarnain. After the speeches, appreciation gifts were presented to all guests from the industry. Later, guests were entertained with a sape performance, an insight session by industry players, and delicious food.

About eighty industry experts from Imperial Hotel Kuching, Hilton Hotel Kuching, Pullman Hotel Kuching, Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), Sarawak Convention Bureau, Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), and Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF), attended the event, which was a success. It was wonderful to see staff and students mingling with our industry partners. Most importantly, the students gained valuable knowledge, skills and experience.
