SEGi Stars Illuminate Sarawak Design Week with Creative Brilliance

Students from SEGi’s Creative and Multimedia Programme recently visited the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching as part of the Sarawak Design Week, which was organised by the Sarawak Design Centre.

The exhibition took place from 13 to 16 February, 2023, and featured designs by both local and international designers. The goal of the visit was to expose first-year students to the real world of design early on.

Malaysian and international designers such as Datuk Prof. Ian Davies @ Hj Iskandar Abdullah, Walter Tan Choo Yong, and Lee Suk Jong were among those featured in the exhibition. The students not only got to see the designs, but they also got to learn about the design industry from the designers.

Yeeni Ayu Rosita, a lecturer in SEGi’s Creative Multimedia Programme and a SayD’signer Sarawak, was invited to share her knowledge and experience in the design industry. Her designs were also displayed at the exhibition, and they piqued the interest of Sarawak’s Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, who sat on it.

During the exhibition night, Datuk Amar Haji Awang Tengah bin Ali Hasan, Deputy Premier, Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, Minister of International Trade, Industry, and Investmen Sarawak, presented Yeeni with a certificate of designer accreditation from Sarawak Design Centre as SayD’signer Sarawak.

The visit was intended to pique the students’ interest in creativity and design. It was an excellent opportunity for students to learn from the designers and gain exposure to the real design industry. Such visits can be extremely beneficial for students who want to pursue careers in the field of design.

According to Statista, Malaysia’s design industry has grown steadily over the years, with a market value of RM 1.1 billion in 2020. The industry is expected to expand further, with a market value of RM 1.2 billion in 2023. The visit to the Sarawak Design Week by students from SEGi’s Creative and Multimedia Programme is a step towards developing talent in the design industry and contributing to its growth.
