PLAY-BASED LEARNING AT SEGi PREPARES FUTURE EDUCATORS

“Play is a child’s work,” a profound declaration by Maria Montessori, forms the core foundation of early childhood education. At its essence, play is the language of childhood, a medium through which children make sense of the world. Recognising its importance, SEGi College Sarawak is dedicated to equipping future early childhood educators with the skills to plan and conduct play-based activities, crucial for holistic development and lifelong learning.

Through the Engaging Play subject offered to Year 1 students of the Bachelor of Early Years Education (BAEYE) programme, students gain invaluable knowledge and skills related to play-based learning. One of the highlights of this programme is the opportunity for students to engage in industrial activities, such as visiting Taska Qaseh Laila. Here, they plan and conduct play-based activities, gaining firsthand experience of the impact of their work on children.

These experiences provide future educators with deep insights into the value of play. Through observation and participation, students witness the outcomes of the play activities they implement for children of various age groups. Reflecting on their practices, they understand areas for improvement, enhancing their ability to offer engaging, valuable, and meaningful play activities in the future.

This hands-on approach aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education. By integrating practical experiences into their curriculum, SEGi not only prepares its students for future careers but also contributes to the global effort to enhance educational quality and inclusivity.

From imaginative pretend play to sensory activities, every playful endeavour is rich with opportunities for growth and discovery. These realisations, gained through the industrial engagement activity, reinforce the belief that in early childhood education, play is paramount. It fosters creativity, curiosity, and collaboration among young learners, crucial elements for their overall development.

The success of these industrial activities underscores SEGi’s commitment to providing a comprehensive educational experience. By focusing on play-based learning, SEGi ensures its students are well-prepared to become effective educators who understand the significant value of play in children’s lives. This commitment to quality education and practical experience solidifies SEGi’s reputation as a leader in early childhood education.

SEGi’s approach to integrating play-based learning within its curriculum not only benefits its students but also aligns with broader educational goals. This initiative showcases SEGi’s dedication to fostering a well-rounded, effective educational framework that prepares future educators to make meaningful contributions to the field of early childhood education.
