Every culture tells a story. Sometimes, those stories help us understand ourselves a little better.
Students from the Certificate in Science programme recently discovered this during an educational visit to the Borneo Cultures Museum, where history, heritage and human connection became powerful lessons in personal growth. Held as part of the Personal Development Skills course, the visit encouraged students to look beyond the exhibits and reflect on the values, perspectives and experiences that shape both communities and themselves.
As they explored the museum’s galleries, students discovered the traditions, customs and lifestyles of Borneo’s many ethnic groups through carefully curated exhibits featuring traditional costumes, musical instruments, artefacts and cultural practices. The museum’s contemporary architecture and immersive displays also demonstrated how heritage and innovation can coexist, creating an engaging environment for learning.
More than simply observing the exhibits, students were encouraged to reflect, ask questions and discuss their observations with one another. The experience challenged them to think critically, communicate confidently and appreciate perspectives different from their own. Interactive exhibits further brought history to life, allowing students to connect classroom concepts with real-world experiences in a meaningful way.
The visit also strengthened teamwork as students worked together on observation activities and shared their reflections throughout the day. In a relaxed and interactive setting, they developed stronger communication skills, built confidence and formed deeper connections with their peers.
By stepping outside the classroom, students gained more than cultural knowledge. They developed greater self-awareness, empathy and an appreciation for the diversity that shapes society. Experiences like these demonstrate that personal growth often happens through exploration, reflection and meaningful engagement with the world around us.
