Meet the Club That’s Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges

SEGi has taken a bold step towards community empowerment and inclusive education with the launch of its newest student-led initiative — the Avantgarde Society. Officially established under the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences, the society is primarily driven by students from the Early Childhood Education programme and is committed to igniting change through innovation, creativity, and service. Its vision is clear: to spark forward-thinking solutions while championing inclusion and social development.

The Avantgarde Society made its debut on 4 May by participating in the PERKATA Open Day at a local special needs school. Guided by faculty advisors Nur Farhana and Nurderina, the members engaged in hands-on inclusive activities, raising awareness about children with special needs and the importance of inclusive education. The event not only allowed students to connect with the community but also highlighted the value of empathy, collaboration, and education in shaping a better world for all.

Globally, over 240 million children live with disabilities, many of whom are still denied access to quality education and inclusive opportunities. Community-based efforts like this provide an essential bridge between academic learning and real-world impact, equipping future educators with the values and tools to drive systemic change. The society’s approach aligns closely with the principles of equity, accessibility, and sustainability — values deeply embedded in global development agendas.

Beyond outreach, the Avantgarde Society aims to become a creative platform for student collaboration, capacity building, and innovation-driven service learning. By promoting active involvement in social causes, it empowers SEGi College Sarawak’s students to take leadership in community development, while also supporting their personal and professional growth as future educators, advocates, and changemakers.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 4: Quality Education
SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
