SEGi College Sarawak joined hands with the community in Kota Samarahan for the “Sale of Work 2024” charity fundraising event, held on 31 August 2024, coinciding with Merdeka Day. Hosted at the new Salvation Army Community Complex, the event featured over 70 stalls offering a delightful range of food, thrift items, and handcrafted goods—all in support of charity. The primary objective was to raise funds for the centre’s various services, including residential care homes, day care centres, kindergartens, and community service initiatives that address the diverse needs of children, youth, the elderly, and those in crisis.
Ten helpers, including members from SEGi Leos, Sg Tapang Leos, and Chung Hua Middle School No. 1 Leos, contributed their time and effort to this event, aligning with SEGi’s values of giving back to the community. The event’s purpose also reflects SEGi’s commitment to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, by supporting a community that provides crucial care services. Engaging in events like these demonstrates SEGi’s dedication to fostering a positive social impact while encouraging students to be proactive in community work.
The event was attended by notable guests, including Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS), who participated in the opening ceremony. Major David Erickson and Captain Carmen Ng Mae Yi presented a certificate of appreciation to Lion Vincent Cheong, Leo Advisor and Faculty Advisor, on behalf of the Lions Club of Kuching Kota Sentosa and SEGi Leo Club Sarawak. This recognition highlights SEGi’s active role in promoting community welfare and supporting local initiatives.
The vibrant event was made even more memorable by lively stage performances from Salvation Army children and guest singers, adding a festive spirit that captivated attendees throughout the day. By coming together for a charitable cause, SEGi College Sarawak and its Leo Club demonstrated their commitment to improving the lives of those in need and uplifting the community through meaningful contributions.
Participation in the “Sale of Work 2024” not only showcased the philanthropic spirit of SEGi students but also underlined the college’s focus on experiential learning, where students develop empathy and leadership skills by actively engaging in initiatives that create positive social change. This effort resonates with SEGi’s philosophy of nurturing well-rounded individuals who are ready to make an impact both locally and globally.
As SEGi continues to contribute to social causes, initiatives like these reinforce the institution’s mission of developing students who are not only academically accomplished but also socially responsible. SEGi College Sarawak’s involvement in community projects ensures that its students grow into compassionate leaders ready to contribute to sustainable development.
