Law Students Experience International Arbitration First-Hand

Three SEGi College Sarawak law students, Yeo Kwang Yaw, Aishah Nur Ashfira binti Mohd Nor, and Kueh Jun Zhao, recently participated in the International Commercial Arbitration Course, held in Kuching from 13 to 14 December 2024. The course was organised by the Sarawak Institute of Arbitration and Dispute Resolution (SiADR) in partnership with the Sarawak Centre of Performance Excellence (SCOPE) and Singapore’s BeiHai Asian International Arbitration Centre (BAIAC), with SEGi College Sarawak among the endorsing organisations.

This two-day course offered a comprehensive overview of arbitration in international commerce, covering essential topics such as the UNCITRAL Model Law, arbitration rules, the roles of arbitration counsel and arbitrators, and role-based exercises. The event culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between SiADR and BAIAC, marking a significant milestone in the region’s arbitration landscape.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of senior lawyer Alex Ngu from Messrs Alex, Jason & Co., the registration fees for the students were fully covered, enabling them to gain exposure to international arbitration and enhance their understanding of dispute resolution mechanisms in the global business arena. The sponsorship was a reflection of the firm’s commitment to supporting legal education and fostering professional growth in the industry.

Jonathan Tan, a lecturer at SEGi College Sarawak, was present on the first day to ensure the smooth registration process for the students. He was joined by key figures such as Alex Ngu and Datuk Yew Jen Kie, a retired High Court judge and Chairperson of SiADR, as well as industrial advisor Jong Yee Ling, further demonstrating the strong industry connections SEGi students have access to.

This enriching experience underscores SEGi’s dedication to equipping its students with industry-relevant knowledge and skills. By offering opportunities to engage with global legal frameworks, the university is preparing its law students for careers in international commercial arbitration, fostering a deeper understanding of global trade and dispute resolution.
