SEGi College Kuching’s Students’ Study Visit aims to build life skills among students such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making which can only truly be achieved through life experience. The Students’ Study Visit enhances critical-thinking skills, reinforces the curriculum, develops a healthy bond between lecturers and peers, and creates industry engagement.
The visit was held on Friday 18th March 2022 from 10.00am to 12.00pm at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK). Twenty-two students from the Diploma in Hotel Management and Diploma in Culinary Arts participated, accompanied by three lecturers from the Faculty of Hospitality.
The Executive Chef and Sous Chef briefed us regarding their operation procedure and showed us the BCCK organisational chart. According to the Sous Chef, BCCK is certified as ISO 9001/ISO 14001, and HACCP/ISO 22000. The term ISO refers to the International Organisation for Standardisation that works to provide standardisation across an array of products and companies globally. Their main goal is to facilitate trade, while at the same time focusing on a process of improvement, safety, main good quality in the areas.
After the briefing, students were divided into two groups for the company tour. We visited the operations and production areas. During the tour, the students were also briefed on the production process of food preparation adhering to safety and hygiene standards as well as the process of delivering the food from the kitchen to the ballroom.
We visited the restaurant of BCCK, named the Raintree Restaurant. The restaurant captain shared his experiences on the operation procedure in the restaurant, tips on how to do a professional table setting and the methods of folding a napkin.
Overall, this first study visit of 2022 to the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) was a success. Everyone had a great time and gained valuable knowledge.
