A fire safety session took place at SEGi College Sarawak for the Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health (DIOSH) programme. Officers from Balai Bomba dan Penyelamat Padungan led the session, part of the “Fire Prevention and Management Skills” course. 20 students attended, focusing on fire fighting equipment and effective fire management strategies.
Students were introduced to various types of fire extinguishers and their proper usage, gaining hands-on experience under the guidance of the firefighters. Crucial fire management techniques were demonstrated, providing students with the confidence to handle fire emergencies effectively. This practical approach reinforced classroom learning, ensuring that students could apply their knowledge in real-world situations.
The fire safety session was a significant step in preparing students for their future careers. Practicing with fire safety equipment and learning directly from professionals allowed students to acquire valuable skills indispensable in occupational safety and health roles. The hands-on experience offered during the session not only enhanced their understanding of fire safety but also boosted their confidence in managing potential fire hazards.
SEGi extends gratitude to Balai Bomba dan Penyelamat Padungan for their invaluable support and expertise. Their collaboration greatly enriched the students’ educational experience, providing them with a strong foundation in fire safety. This initiative reflects SEGi’s commitment to offering comprehensive and practical education, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the demands of their future careers.
Statistics underscore the importance of such training. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), occupational accidents cause more than 2.3 million deaths annually worldwide. Effective fire safety education is crucial in reducing these numbers and ensuring safer working environments (ILO, 2021). The fire safety session at SEGi is a proactive step towards fostering a culture of safety and preparedness among future professionals.
The success of this fire safety session highlights SEGi’s role as a leading institution in providing quality education that goes beyond the classroom.
