SEGi College Sarawak celebrated Chinese New Year recently with a joyful Open House event on 3 February 2023. A stunning and unusual Yee Sang dish, fashioned like a rabbit, cooked by Diploma in Culinary Arts (DICA) students and their culinary lecturer, was the focus of the event.
DICA students learned about the critical Mise en Place process in the culinary arts, which entails the preparation and organising of ingredients, tools, and equipment prior to cooking. They next put their knowledge to use by assisting their instructor in preparing for the Yee Sang assembly.
At the event, the students demonstrated their culinary expertise and ingenuity by building the Yee Sang meal in front of 60 guests at the main campus. They prepared the ingredients under the supervision of their lecturer, resulting in a visually spectacular and delectable Yee Sang dish.
With the production of the Yee Sang meal, the students not only demonstrated their culinary skills, but also expanded their understanding for diverse cultures and traditions. Yee Sang is a traditional Chinese meal that represents good fortune and wealth in the next year. The students learned about the significance of cultural heritage in Chinese culture and how to incorporate it into their culinary creations.
The Open House event was a huge success, and the Yee Sang dish was a big hit. The institution is proud of the DICA students’ hard work and dedication, and this great occasion has brought the college community together to celebrate.
Overall, the Mise en Place and Yee Sang assembly experiences offered DICA students at SEGi College Sarawak with a wonderful culinary arts learning opportunity. Students were able to put their abilities to use, impress the college community, and learn about various cultures and traditions.
