Behind Every Smart Financial Decision Is a Story Like This

SEGi’s Faculty of Business & Accountancy (FOBA) provided students with an eye-opening industry experience during a financial literacy talk held on 19 March 2025 at Theatre Hall, Level 5. The session featured a dynamic panel of professionals from the finance and insurance sectors, each sharing their real-world journeys and practical advice on financial security, planning, and career development.

The speakers brought a blend of experience and relatability, bridging textbook knowledge with the realities of the financial world. Lawrence, a financial planner with more than two decades of experience, emphasised mentorship and the long-term value of building client trust. Marisa, a recognised leader in life insurance, encouraged students to view setbacks as stepping stones, while Sherwen shared how discipline and commitment allowed him to excel in insurance while still pursuing his degree. Janice, who pivoted from interior design to finance, inspired the audience with her story of blending creativity with financial strategy.

This initiative provided more than just a career overview—it stressed the importance of early financial literacy in personal empowerment and national development. According to Bank Negara Malaysia’s Financial Capability and Inclusion Demand Side Survey 2018, only 24% of Malaysians can sustain living expenses for more than three months if they lose their main source of income. Talks like this play a crucial role in helping students understand their financial responsibilities and long-term planning options early in life.

The session also highlighted the versatility of career pathways in finance, demonstrating that success isn’t limited to a single background or personality type. The panel’s stories of resilience, adaptability, and entrepreneurial spirit encouraged students to explore the field not just for financial gain, but to improve lives through informed decision-making and ethical practice genuinely.

As financial literacy continues to be a cornerstone of global economic empowerment, education institutions must foster conversations that prepare future professionals to navigate an increasingly complex financial landscape. This event not only inspired SEGi College Sarawak’s students, but also reinforced the role of business education in shaping responsible, future-ready individuals.
