Students Gain Real-World Safety Insights at UNIMAS

Students from the Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health (DIOSH) programme gained meaningful exposure to real-world safety practices through an educational visit to the Occupational Safety and Health Department at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). The visit, held on 27 October 2025, gave students a closer look at how large institutions manage safety systems and respond to potential hazards.

The session began with an introduction to the UNIMAS Emergency Response Plan. Students learned about the structure of the emergency response team, the procedures followed during emergency situations and the importance of preparedness in protecting the well-being of staff and students. This segment highlighted the level of coordination and planning required to maintain a safe campus environment.

The visit then continued with an explanation of the management of hazardous substances. Students were taken to the hazardous materials storage room, where officers demonstrated proper storage procedures, labelling requirements, segregation practices and ventilation needs. This exposure helped students understand how compliance with safety regulations reduces risks associated with chemical handling.

The next stop was the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory. Here, students observed demonstrations on machine safety, correct maintenance procedures and the role of risk assessment in preventing accidents. This experience reinforced the need for systematic safety controls in technical environments.

The visit concluded at the OSH Laboratory, where students were introduced to various equipment and testing methods used for safety monitoring and workplace evaluation. The hands-on explanations strengthened their understanding of how safety inspections, monitoring tools and evaluation procedures support effective OSH management.

Overall, the visit enabled students to connect classroom concepts with practical applications. By observing real safety systems in operation, they gained a deeper appreciation for the responsibilities carried by safety professionals and the importance of maintaining strong safety cultures within institutional environments.
