What happens when classroom learning meets real-world trading floors? For students from the Faculty of Business, Accountancy, and Law, a visit to Kenanga Investment Bank on 10 October 2025 answered that question with insight, inspiration, and industry connection.
Organised as part of SEGi’s commitment to experiential learning, the visit bridged academic theory with professional practice, allowing students to witness how financial concepts come alive in one of Malaysia’s leading investment institutions. Through this collaboration, the industry literally stepped into the classroom, transforming abstract models and graphs into real decisions and human impact.
The session was led by Ms. Helen Tan Ming Kieng, Regional Director of Equity Broking at Kenanga Investment Bank, who guided students through the intricate workings of market order execution, client relationship management, and ethical practices in equity broking. She highlighted how integrity, accountability, and lifelong learning form the foundation of a resilient finance professional.
Students seized the opportunity to ask about market volatility, investor behaviour, and the evolving skillsets required in modern finance. For many, this exchange reshaped how they viewed textbook theories — from behavioural finance to market efficiency — as living systems driven by trust, data, and discipline.
A key message from Ms. Tan was the importance of internships and real-world immersion in building professional confidence. These opportunities, she noted, enable students to cultivate analytical reasoning, ethical judgment, and adaptability — all crucial attributes in an increasingly competitive financial landscape.
Adding further depth to the learning experience, Mr. Calvin Chan and a team of young remisiers introduced students to the tools of modern trading, from technical and fundamental analysis to live data interpretation. Students saw first-hand how price trends, trading volumes, and company fundamentals inform portfolio strategies, linking classroom theories directly to market execution.
The highlight came with a guided tour of Kenanga’s trading floor, where students observed live market operations and KenTrade — the bank’s proprietary online trading platform. Concepts like liquidity, bid-ask spread, and market depth suddenly took tangible form as students watched professionals execute trades in real time.
For the participants, the experience was more than an industrial visit — it was an awakening. Many left inspired to explore internships and careers in investment banking, now equipped with a sharper sense of how classroom lessons evolve into professional expertise.
By bringing industry into the classroom, SEGi College Sarawak continues to strengthen its hallmark of career-ready education, ensuring that every graduate learns not only about finance, but from those who shape it.
