SEGi law students recently made their mark by competing in the Sarawak Premier’s Cup Integrity Forum Competition 2025, showcasing not just their academic excellence but their commitment to shaping a more transparent and united society. The team engaged in rigorous debates on integrity and unity, reflecting the institution’s ethos of nurturing graduates who are not only career-ready but also socially responsible contributors to the nation.
Representing SEGi College Sarawak, the group of law students — Alifah Eliana Binti Jeffery, Chong Jin Yu, Fadhila Mazlin Binti Johar, and Isabel Misel Anak Crowther, with Telford Engan Tan part of the team but absent during competition day — went head-to-head with nine other higher education institutions across the state. Their prepared forum, themed “Integriti dan Perpaduan: Sejauh Mana Bumi Kenyalang Bersedia?” (Integrity and Unity: How Far the Land of Hornbill is Ready?), and their spontaneous debate on “Integriti dalam Ekonomi Digital: Antara Peluang dan Penipuan” (Integrity in the Digital Economy: Between Opportunity and Fraud), demonstrated agility of thought, critical reasoning, and leadership qualities.
The competition was conducted fully in Malay and jointly organised by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), the Sarawak Integrity and Ombudsman Unit (UNIONS), and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP). While the SEGi team secured a consolation prize, their participation represents something more important: a platform for students to engage with urgent societal issues. In a state where motorcycles alone make up 96% of passenger vehicles in neighbouring Vietnam, and where Malaysia’s digital economy is expected to contribute 25.5% to GDP by 2025, the forum’s focus on integrity in pluralism and digital transitions is timely and crucial.
Education has long been recognised as a powerful driver of social change. According to the United Nations, over 1.5 billion people were impacted by corruption-related losses annually, undermining development efforts worldwide (UNODC). By cultivating student voices on integrity, governance, and digital ethics, SEGi positions itself as a forward-looking institution aligning with Malaysia’s broader aspiration to build a clean, fair, and sustainable society.
This participation underscores SEGi’s mission to bridge classroom learning with real-world impact. Engagement in events like the Premier’s Cup provides students with experiential platforms to test their knowledge while reinforcing values of accountability, inclusivity, and ethical leadership — qualities increasingly in demand in a complex, globalised world.
In empowering students to critically examine issues of unity and integrity, SEGi is nurturing leaders who will contribute to Malaysia’s future not only as professionals but as citizens guided by ethical principles. This is why SEGi continuously encourages participation in competitions, forums, and real-world engagements that mirror the challenges faced by society today.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
