Seven Future Lawyers Just Got Their First Taste of Justice

Seven aspiring lawyers from SEGi College Sarawak have marked an important milestone by completing the inaugural coordinated law firms’ attachment programme, a two-month initiative that concluded on 8 August 2025. Designed to bridge theory and practice, the programme placed students in leading legal chambers across Sarawak, where they experienced the realities of legal practice under professional mentorship.

This initiative reflects SEGi’s strong commitment to preparing graduates who are not only academically competent but also industry-ready. By embedding experiential learning into the curriculum, the Faculty of Law ensures that students develop practical insights into legal processes, courtroom etiquette, client engagement, and ethical responsibilities. The attachment also created opportunities to observe first-hand how law firms operate, reinforcing the connection between classroom knowledge and professional application.

The selected students were placed across established firms including Arthur Lee, Lin & Co. Advocates, Battenberg & Talma Advocates, Clement & Co. Advocates, Ali Basah & Partners Advocates, Fairuz & Jubilant Advocates, and Alex, Jason & Co. Advocates. Through this exposure, participants engaged in case research, drafting, and advisory support, gaining a deeper appreciation of how the law functions as both a professional practice and a pillar of justice.

Globally, practical training is increasingly recognised as essential to producing competent lawyers. According to the World Bank, effective legal institutions are a cornerstone for economic growth and social stability. In Malaysia, the legal services sector employs more than 20,000 practitioners and continues to grow as demand for legal expertise expands in corporate governance, dispute resolution, and human rights advocacy. Ensuring that students enter this ecosystem well-prepared strengthens not only their career prospects but also the legal profession’s overall capacity.

The initiative also highlighted the importance of partnerships between academia and industry. By working closely with law firms, SEGi fosters a collaborative model of education that enhances student employability and contributes to building stronger institutions — aligning directly with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on quality education, decent work, and justice.

As the students return to campus with fresh perspectives, their achievement signals the Faculty of Law’s ability to equip future legal professionals with the adaptability, resilience, and ethical grounding demanded in today’s complex legal landscape. This first-of-its-kind attachment programme has set a benchmark for future collaborations, reaffirming SEGi’s role as a leader in industry-integrated education.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
