The Journalism Talk That Had Students Rewriting Their Futures

Diploma in Mass Communication students from SEGi were given a rare opportunity to dive deep into the art and future of feature writing during a dynamic one-hour talk themed “The In and Out of Feature Writing”. The session, held on 16 July 2025, was delivered by Priscilla Tawie, an award-winning feature writer from New Sarawak Tribune, whose accolades include the 2024 Kenyalang Journalism Award and the 10th Anak Sarawak Journalist Award 2023.

With storytelling at the heart of journalism, the session offered students powerful insights into the evolving role of feature writers, including the influence of AI on journalism. From selecting compelling subjects to dissecting critical angles and creating impactful narratives, Priscilla emphasised that good writing is not just technical—it’s emotional, investigative, and purpose-driven. Her personal journey, especially her acclaimed four-part feature on the Batu Lintang POW camp during the Japanese occupation, sparked strong interest and thoughtful questions from the students.

As the media industry adapts to the integration of AI tools, Priscilla reminded students that while technology is advancing rapidly, human creativity, judgement, and storytelling remain irreplaceable. According to the World Economic Forum, by 2025, 85 million jobs may be displaced by AI—but 97 million new roles may emerge, many requiring human-AI collaboration. For aspiring journalists, this means learning how to work with AI, not against it—something Priscilla highlighted as essential to future-proofing their careers.

She also advised students to choose their internships wisely, invest in their craft, and build credibility through consistency and passion. The talk not only provided technical guidance, but also sparked renewed motivation among the students to pursue journalism with heart, integrity, and resilience.

By hosting industry leaders and real-world journalists, SEGi College Sarawak continues to connect classroom learning with current industry demands—nurturing media graduates who are informed, adaptable, and socially conscious in a rapidly shifting global media landscape.
