How a Simple Walk Sparked a City-Wide Conversation

On a vibrant Sunday morning, 117 participants laced up their shoes for the SEGi Fun Walk Day 2025, a 5km walk that championed health, sustainability, and community unity. Organised by the SEGi Leo Club Sarawak in conjunction with DBKU Kuching’s Car Free Morning at Padang Merdeka, the initiative reflected the growing importance of youth-led environmental and health advocacy. The event was a collaboration with SEGi College Sarawak and the SEGi Moot & Law Club, under the leadership of Organising Chairperson Leo Carmen Yeo Jie Mien and Faculty Advisor Lion Vincent Cheong.

Beginning at 7am from SEGi College Sarawak Main Campus, the walk invited students, staff, and community members to take active steps towards better health and greener living. Every stride taken along the car-free streets served a dual purpose—raising awareness on non-communicable disease prevention through exercise, and advocating for reduced vehicle emissions in urban areas. According to the World Health Organization, physical inactivity is linked to over 5 million deaths annually, while transportation is a leading contributor to global carbon emissions.

Themed “Leos & Your Steps Make the Difference”, the event brought together 13 passionate Leo committee members who ensured smooth registration, hydration, and checkpoint management. Beyond the walk, participants donned blue ribbons in solidarity with SEGi’s values of service and unity, adding a visual message of hope and purpose to the streets of Kuching. It was a celebration of movement—not just in steps, but in mindset.

Further extending the spirit of giving, leftover buns and drinks were donated to Sarawak Cheshire Home, transforming surplus into support for the less fortunate. This final gesture beautifully embodied the Leo Club’s ethos of service, kindness, and inclusivity.

By combining physical activity with civic responsibility and environmental consciousness, the Fun Walk Day represented more than an event—it was a symbol of how education, youth leadership, and public engagement can converge for real impact.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
