The Battle Against Trauma Starts With Us

The Faculty of Education and Social Sciences (FESS) of SEGi  recently hosted “Breaking the Silence: Addressing Traumas” on 26 June 2025 at Theatrette Hall. The event underscored the urgent need to address trauma and mental health challenges among students, particularly during a time when the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that depression and anxiety disorders have risen by over 25% globally since the pandemic began.

Leading the session was Dr. Richard Kaley, a Canadian Clinical Psychologist with over three decades of experience, including work with the Canadian Department of National Defense and Health Canada. His talk illuminated the nature of trauma, its pervasive impact on mental well-being, and provided practical strategies to build resilience. Moderated by a Bachelor of Psychology student, the session encouraged open dialogue, with students actively sharing perspectives and raising questions.

Trauma is a global mental health concern that often remains hidden; UNICEF estimates nearly 300 million adolescents worldwide are affected by violence, abuse, or neglect. Creating safe spaces to discuss these issues is crucial, helping individuals process and manage difficult emotional experiences.

Approximately 30 students from Diploma in Psychology, Bachelor in Psychology, and Diploma in Early Childhood Education programmes attended the session, reflecting SEGi College Sarawak’s ongoing commitment to nurturing holistic, empathetic leaders who are ready to tackle complex social challenges. Such initiatives align with the institution’s mission to equip students with not just academic knowledge but also critical life skills, fostering resilience and compassion in future educators and mental health professionals.

A token of appreciation was presented to Dr. Richard, followed by a group photo, symbolising the collective spirit of support and understanding. These efforts resonate with global calls to prioritise mental health, an area highlighted by the United Nations as central to sustainable development and global well-being.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
