Gowning the Future: SEGi College Sarawak’s Faculty of Law recently hosted its signature Professional Robing & Legal Attire Showcase in collaboration with the SEGi Moot and Law Society. More than a ceremonial tribute, the event underscored SEGi’s commitment to producing ethical, resilient, and socially responsible legal professionals in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
Welcoming speeches emphasised that legal education is not just about academic excellence but about preparing students for real-world challenges, where resilience and ethics matter most. The event featured the unveiling of a permanently displayed robed mannequin, symbolising the transition from classroom learning to courtroom tradition.
Keynote speaker Francis Teron Kadap reminded aspiring lawyers that while legal knowledge can be wielded as a weapon or shield, true professionalism comes from ethical practice and perseverance, reinforcing the global call for stronger, more accountable institutions (https://sdgs.un.org/goals).
Globally, fewer than 10% of law graduates continue into long-term practice (The Bar Council, UK, https://www.barcouncil.org.uk), highlighting the need for institutions like SEGi to nurture not just legal knowledge but mental fortitude and a sense of justice.
The showcase also provided invaluable networking opportunities for students, reinforcing research that early professional exposure significantly improves graduate employability (World Economic Forum, https://www.weforum.org). SEGi remains dedicated to equipping students with practical skills, confidence, and ethical grounding, ensuring they become advocates of peace and justice in a rapidly changing world.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
Quality Education (SDG 4)
Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16)
Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10)
