Youth Leaders Don’t Just Emerge — They’re Built Here

Leadership isn’t something learned in theory — it’s forged through experience, challenge, and connection. That was the spirit behind the Leo Inspiration & Leadership Team Building 2025, a one-day youth empowerment retreat held on 31 May 2025 at Abba Paradise, Bau. Organised by SEGi’s Leo Club and led by Organising Chairperson Leo Chong Zu Er, the retreat brought together 11 dynamic Leo members in a full-day programme designed to build confidence, sharpen leadership, and cultivate purpose-driven collaboration.

The day unfolded with energising activities, inspiring reflections, and team-based challenges that moved beyond textbooks and into the realm of real-life leadership. A standout moment came during the motivational session delivered by Club Advisor and HRDC-Certified Trainer, Lion Vincent Cheong, who encouraged participants to lead with authenticity and compassion. Members also engaged in personal sharing circles, high-energy games, and a communal steamboat and BBQ session — bonding not just over tasks, but over values, vision, and shared growth.

The initiative reflects SEGi College Sarawak’s commitment to nurturing socially responsible student leaders who can contribute meaningfully to both local and global communities. According to the United Nations, leadership development is a crucial part of empowering youth for sustainable development, especially when one in six young people worldwide are neither employed, in education, nor training (NEET) — a global issue that requires urgent, inclusive solutions. By creating hands-on, peer-led platforms for leadership, SEGi’s Leo Club is actively addressing this gap while modelling the kind of partnership-driven progress needed for sustainable change.

The success of this retreat lies not only in what was taught, but in what was experienced — and who participants became by the end of it. With each activity focused on resilience, empathy, and collaboration, the retreat aligned closely with the values behind the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and SEGi’s own mission to build ethical, future-ready citizens. Each participant received an e-certificate endorsed by Vincent Cheong, reinforcing the value and professionalism of their experience.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 4 – Quality Education

SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities
