Access to nutritious food is a fundamental right, yet millions worldwide continue to face food insecurity. To combat this, SEGi College Sarawak’s Rotary Club took meaningful action by organising the Salvation Army Food Sharing and Caring Event on 15 February 2025. This initiative aimed to support underprivileged children, promote well-being, and create meaningful connections, reinforcing the importance of community-driven solutions to hunger.
Food insecurity remains a global challenge, with an estimated 2.4 billion people lacking access to adequate food in 2023. By partnering with The Salvation Army Kuching Children’s Care Centre, the event provided nutritious meals and emotional support to children, highlighting the role of education institutions in social impact initiatives. Breakfast is often regarded as the most important meal of the day, and research shows that students who start the day with a healthy meal perform better academically and socially.
The event began with breakfast sharing, where students engaged in heartfelt conversations with the children, reinforcing the power of human connection in fostering emotional and psychological well-being. Following this, a series of interactive games and activities brought smiles and laughter, ensuring that the children not only received physical nourishment but also experienced joy, inclusivity, and a sense of belonging.
Beyond charity, the initiative reinforced the importance of sustainable hunger relief strategies. Studies indicate that childhood malnutrition affects cognitive development and long-term productivity, creating barriers to economic and social growth. By taking active steps to support food security, the initiative aligns with global efforts to eliminate hunger and promote well-being.
The success of this event is a testament to what collective action can achieve, demonstrating that small acts of kindness can make a significant difference. As part of SEGi’s commitment to social responsibility, initiatives like these ensure that students develop empathy, leadership, and a deep understanding of social issues, preparing them to be global citizens who contribute meaningfully to society.
Sustainable change begins with community-driven efforts that extend beyond one-time donations. Engagement, education, and partnerships play a vital role in ensuring that everyone has access to food, dignity, and hope for a better future.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
