On 23 September 2024, the Moot and Law Society of SEGi College Sarawak (SMLS) organised a cultural heritage exploration at the Borneo Cultures Museum, attended by 51 law students across A-level, Diploma, and Degree programmes. The event offered students the unique opportunity to engage with Borneo’s rich indigenous cultures and histories while promoting respect for the region’s cultural heritage. Through a series of guided tours and exhibits, students deepened their understanding of the island’s historical, environmental, and political evolution.
The museum tour focused on the conservation of cultural artefacts and intangible cultural heritage, such as rituals, languages, and oral traditions, emphasising their importance in the modern world. This experience highlighted the ethical responsibility of legal professionals in safeguarding cultural legacies, particularly as they face the threats of modernisation and globalisation. The students were encouraged to reflect on how legal frameworks can play a vital role in protecting both tangible and intangible heritage.
Guided by SEGi law lecturers Hetty Susilawati Asmuni and Sathiswaran Sathiasegaran, the students gained valuable insights into the interconnectedness of law, culture, and social responsibility. The tour also featured contributions from Dayang Nur Asnida Awang Iman, Head of Operations at the Borneo Cultures Museum, whose team waived all admission charges and provided enriching guidance throughout the visit.
The event not only served as an educational experience but also strengthened the sense of community among the students. By bonding outside the classroom, they developed lasting relationships across academic levels, reinforcing the importance of collaboration in the legal profession. This experience highlighted the need for well-rounded legal professionals who are attuned to the cultural contexts in which they practice.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): SDG 4 – Quality Education
