Real-World Court Proceedings in Interactive Workshop

SEGi College Sarawak’s Faculty of Law, in collaboration with the SEGi Moot & Law Society (SMLS), hosted an engaging workshop titled ‘Basic Principles of Court Proceedings.’ This two-day interactive event, attended by law students from various programmes, aimed to provide participants with practical insights into the workflow of a court case. Through team-building activities, including quizzes and case simulations, students explored the essential steps in litigation, from preparing case papers to delivering opening and closing speeches.

The workshop featured expert speakers from the legal industry, including Russell Lim and Jong Yee Ling, senior lawyers from Messrs Chew, Jugah, Wan Ullok & Co. Advocates. Both speakers brought invaluable experience to the table, discussing real-life court proceedings in civil and criminal litigation. They shared their expertise on various legal matters, including personal injury, family law, criminal cases, and more. Students were able to learn directly from these professionals, gaining a deeper understanding of how to approach a trial, prepare evidence, and address legal issues in court.

The highlight of the workshop was the hands-on experience provided by the simulation of a full court trial. This unique approach, contrasting with traditional mooting that focuses on appeal cases, allowed students to engage in first-instance proceedings, a critical aspect of the legal profession. The event also included a prize-giving ceremony, where appreciation tokens were presented to the guest speakers, and a post-event speech by the SMLS vice-president. The successful event was a testament to SEGi’s commitment to providing practical, industry-relevant education for its students.
