SEGi College Sarawak Students Explore the World of Early Intervention at OSE

Thirty students from SEGi College Sarawak’s Diploma in Psychology, Bachelor of Education, and Bachelor of Early Years Education programmes embarked on a transformative learning journey to the One-Stop Early Intervention Centre (OSEIC) Sarawak on 12th November. Accompanied by their dedicated lecturers, the students gained invaluable insights into the world of early intervention for children with developmental delays.

Warmly welcomed by OSEIC staff, the students participated in an engaging briefing session that covered the centre’s history, shed light on the statistics of special needs in Sarawak, and outlined future expansion plans. They learned about the diverse range of services offered, including occupational therapy, speech therapy, and specialised support for children with autism and ADHD.

Divided into smaller groups for a more focused experience, the students toured OSEIC’s impressive facilities, including the Snoezelen Room, therapy pool, children’s gym, and learning centre. They observed various therapies in action and interacted with the children, gaining firsthand experience of the centre’s impactful work. The multi-sensory environment of the Snoezelen Room, designed to provide calming and stimulating experiences, particularly resonated with the students.

This educational visit provided a powerful learning experience, highlighting the crucial role of early intervention in supporting children with developmental delays and their families. It underscored the importance of a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to care, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges and rewards of working in this field.

The experience left a lasting impact on the students, inspiring them to consider how they can contribute to creating inclusive and supportive communities. As one student reflected, “Seeing the dedication of the staff and the positive impact on the children was truly inspiring. It reinforced my passion for working with young children and making a difference in their lives.”
