Educators Learn Key Strategies for Inclusion

SEGi College Sarawak’s Faculty of Education and Social Sciences recently hosted an inspiring educational talk on 29 July 2024, titled “Embracing Inclusion in Early Childhood Education: Strategies & Practices.” The event, which drew nearly 40 students from the Diploma in Early Childhood Education, Bachelor of Early Years Education, and Bachelor of Education programmes, was led by seasoned educator and special needs therapist, Joon Yuh Chyi. Her deep expertise in special education provided students with valuable insights into creating truly inclusive learning environments.

Joon emphasised that true inclusion in early childhood education goes beyond merely integrating special needs students into mainstream classrooms. Instead, it requires cultivating an environment where every child, regardless of their abilities, can flourish. She shared practical strategies for supporting students with dyslexia, highlighting the importance of adapting teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs.

Key strategies discussed included the use of multisensory approaches, engaging multiple senses simultaneously to enhance concept understanding, and the importance of individualized instruction tailored to each student’s unique needs. Joon also showcased assistive technologies, such as text-to-speech software, as essential tools for supporting students with learning difficulties.

The talk resonated deeply with the students, who found it both informative and motivating. Many expressed that the session offered practical tools that extended beyond their classroom learning, equipping them for their future teaching careers. One student noted, “Joon’s practical examples and strategies have provided me with a deeper understanding of how to implement inclusion effectively in the classroom.”

This event underscores SEGi College Sarawak’s commitment to preparing future educators who are well-equipped to handle the challenges of diverse classrooms. By empowering students with the knowledge and strategies to foster inclusive learning environments, SEGi is paving the way for a more equitable educational landscape.

The talk on inclusion was not just a learning opportunity but a call to action for future educators to embrace diversity and ensure every child has the chance to succeed.
