SEGi GUIDES SPM GRADUATES THROUGH LEGAL SYSTEM

On the auspicious date of 9 May 2024, the corridors of justice in the Kuching High Court Complex, Petra Jaya, witnessed a unique event that intertwined education with experience. SEGi College Sarawak organised an immersion programme designed to provide a firsthand encounter with the inner workings of the legal system for SPM leavers.

With anticipation buzzing in the air, 20 SPM graduates stepped into the hallowed halls of the court complex, ready to unravel the mysteries of the legal world. Welcomed by Heng Yii Min, the Senior Assistant Registrar, the participants were ushered into a conference room where their journey of enlightenment began.

In this intimate setting, Heng Yii Min and his colleagues elucidated the intricacies of the Malaysian legal system, shedding light on the separation of powers and the penalties for various offences. The participants engaged actively, peppering the Registrar with questions about pathways to legal careers, the salaries of judges, and the government’s role in upholding the legal framework.

As the morning progressed, the group embarked on a guided tour of the courtrooms, absorbing insights into courtroom decorum, disciplinary rules, and the solemnity of legal proceedings. The visit to the Law Gallery and High Court Library further enriched their understanding, providing a glimpse into the vast reservoir of legal knowledge housed within the court complex.

Amidst this educational odyssey stood Angie Ho, a course counsellor whose presence added invaluable guidance and support to the participants throughout the programme. Her mentorship fostered an environment of openness and encouraged the students to freely express their thoughts and queries.

A pivotal moment arrived with the presence of Flora Santi Anak Tahil, a law lecturer at SEGi and a practising lawyer with over nine years of experience. Through her anecdotes and personal journey, Flora captivated the participants, offering a real-world perspective that ignited a spark of inspiration in many, prompting them to consider pursuing a legal career.

The success of the immersion programme was also indebted to the contributions of the SEGi Law Society committee members, Chynta Nur Adreana Binti Mohamad Adery and Dayangku Nabila Riwana Binti Awang Mohamad, who volunteered their time and expertise to guide the participants. Their unwavering commitment to nurturing academic excellence and fostering meaningful interactions left an indelible mark on the participants, instilling in them a newfound appreciation for the legal profession.

As the curtains closed on this enlightening experience, the participants departed with a deeper understanding of the legal landscape and newfound aspirations. SEGi’s immersion programme had not only provided these SPM leavers with a glimpse into the world of justice but had also ignited within them a passion for the pursuit of truth and justice. In the corridors of the Kuching High Court Complex, seeds of curiosity had been sown, destined to blossom into the pillars of tomorrow’s legal fraternity.
