SEGi College Sarawak recently demonstrated its commitment to community service through a charity food fair held at the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS), in collaboration with Sg Tapang Leos and the Lion Club of Kota Sentosa. The event, which brought together 15 dedicated volunteers from SEGi and over 71 stalls, aimed to support the Sarawak Society for the Deaf. This initiative was a testament to SEGi’s dedication to fostering a spirit of empathy and community engagement among its students.
Led by Albert Wong and Ernest Ting, the charity food fair saw enthusiastic participation from non-governmental organisations and private companies. Esteemed guests, including Yang Berhormat Datuk Amar Prof. Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, graced the event, reflecting its importance and the far-reaching impact of community-driven activities. The funds raised at the fair will help support the Sarawak Society for the Deaf, contributing to the broader mission of creating an inclusive community.
The success of SEGi’s food stall, which sold out by 11 am, underscored the collective enthusiasm and support for this noble cause. By fostering a culture of giving back, SEGi College Sarawak continues to demonstrate how educational institutions can serve as valuable pillars of the community, nurturing future leaders who are not only academically competent but also socially responsible.
Such initiatives align closely with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. These goals aim to build inclusive communities and ensure equal access to opportunities for all members of society. The charity food fair is a concrete example of how SEGi promotes these values through active participation in meaningful community events.
According to UNESCO, education should not only focus on academic success but also foster values like empathy and a sense of social responsibility (source: UNESCO). By organising and participating in events such as the charity food fair, SEGi reinforces its commitment to providing holistic education, one that prepares students to be responsible citizens ready to make a positive difference.
The SEGi Leo Club, in partnership with the Lions Club of Kota Sentosa, plays a vital role in these community efforts, setting an example of leadership and service. Through events like this, SEGi continues to make a significant impact, transforming the lives of those in need and instilling the spirit of giving among its students.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities
