Leadership, collaboration, and service took centre stage as SEGi College Sarawak’s Leo Club participated in the Region 1 Leo Clubs Joint Installation for FY2024-2025. Held on 16 September 2024 at the MBKS Auditorium, the event gathered 19 Leo Clubs from Region 1, District 308-A2, bringing together over 300 participants, including representatives from colleges, universities, Lions District Cabinet Officers, and Leo Advisors. The installation served as a significant platform to empower young leaders and strengthen regional partnerships.
With youth leadership at the heart of the initiative, the ceremony marked the official induction of club key officers, board members, and new Leos, ensuring a new wave of passionate changemakers ready to drive impactful community service. Studies show that 75% of young people involved in leadership-based volunteering report higher confidence and career readiness (source: National Youth Leadership Council). This initiative directly supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17 – Partnerships for the Goals, reinforcing the power of collective action in shaping socially responsible future leaders.
The installation was officiated by District Leo Clubs Chairperson Chia Siaw Ling, representing District Governor Annie Ho, with distinguished guests including Lions Club of Kuching Kota Sentosa President Lion Mike Wong and SEGi Faculty Advisor and Leo Advisor Lion Vincent Cheong. The event highlighted the importance of youth mentorship, leadership development, and the role of higher education institutions in fostering community engagement. Reports indicate that students engaged in structured leadership activities are 80% more likely to take on future leadership roles in their careers (source: Harvard Graduate School of Education).
Eight SEGi Leo members actively took part, with several assisting at the reception counter, ensuring a smooth and well-organised ceremony. A proud milestone for SEGi, President Leo Phyllis Lim Pei Xuan, Secretary Leo Alycia Sim Syn Yee, and Treasurer Leo James Lee Jun Sheng were officially installed as key officers for the Fiscal Year 2024-2025, ready to spearhead impactful service projects and inspire fellow Leos. The ceremony also featured cultural and group dance performances, a reflection of unity, diversity, and the spirit of youth empowerment.
Guest of honour Past Council Chairman Tan Soh Tar delivered a compelling keynote address, reinforcing the significance of youth-driven community service and the impact of regional collaboration. A memento was presented to her in appreciation of her presence, marking the conclusion of an event dedicated to strengthening student leadership and fostering civic responsibility.
The success of this joint installation reaffirms the commitment to nurturing a new generation of socially conscious leaders, equipped with the skills, confidence, and mindset to create meaningful change. Leadership is not just about holding a position; it is about taking action, building connections, and creating opportunities that benefit communities on a larger scale.
