What Happens When Students Get Serious About Real-World Marketing?

Bridging the gap between classroom theory and real-world business practice, SEGi College’s Certificate in Business students recently brought innovation to life through their “JOM Try!” product pitching project for the MKT3014 marketing subject. Guided by the Faculty of Business, Accountancy & Law, the project challenged students to create and market a new product for a company of their choice, putting into action every fundamental concept of marketing from analysis to promotion.

Students worked in teams to develop innovative new products, conducting detailed market analyses and designing marketing strategies to penetrate new markets or expand existing ones. Armed with creativity and strategic thinking, they showcased their innovations at booth exhibitions open to the public, promoting their products using eye-catching posters and persuasive sales techniques. The hands-on experience not only deepened their understanding of consumer behaviour and product positioning but also strengthened their skills in direct engagement, critical thinking, and marketing strategy execution.

Projects like “JOM Try!” are critical in shaping future-ready graduates who can meet global business demands. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023, 44% of workers’ skills will need to be updated by 2028 to keep pace with changing industry needs. Equipping students with applied knowledge in product innovation and marketing directly supports this imperative, enabling them to transition into the workforce with confidence and practical expertise.

The project also emphasised responsible product development and ethical marketing practices, vital in today’s consumer-driven economy where 73% of global consumers say they would change consumption habits to reduce environmental impact. Students were encouraged to consider sustainability and responsible consumption patterns in their product designs and messaging, laying a strong foundation for future careers aligned with global business trends.

Beyond marketing know-how, the initiative fostered teamwork, leadership, and resilience among the 10 participating students and 8 supporting faculty members. These are essential skills identified under SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), reinforcing SEGi’s commitment to delivering an education that is both globally relevant and socially responsible.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):

Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8)

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9)

Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12)
