The hospitality industry is one of the world’s fastest-growing sectors, employing over 289 million people globally and contributing 10% to the global GDP. Recognising the vast career potential within this field, SEGi’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (SoHTM) hosted an engaging career talk on 20 November 2025, in collaboration with G Hotel. Titled “Unlocking Diverse Career Paths in Hospitality,” the session provided students with first-hand insights into the dynamic world of hospitality careers.
Industry veteran Thomas Ch’ng, Director of Human Resources at G Hotel, shared his 34 years of expertise, offering a behind-the-scenes look at talent management, career progression, and the importance of adaptability in hospitality. His experience negotiating six collective agreements with the National Union positioned him as a leading authority in workforce development and employment opportunities within the sector. With the hospitality industry projected to create over 126 million new jobs by 2032, sessions like these equip students with the knowledge and confidence to enter a thriving global workforce.
Real-world exposure is a key driver of career readiness, which is why SoHTM is taking learning beyond the classroom. On 3 March 2025, an exclusive field visit to G Hotel will provide students with a first-hand look at world-class hospitality operations, further strengthening their understanding of hotel management, guest experience, and service excellence. According to research, students with industry exposure are 50% more likely to secure employment in their chosen field upon graduation.
With experiential learning at the heart of its curriculum, SEGi College Penang’s SoHTM continues to forge strategic partnerships with industry leaders, ensuring that students are well-prepared for the ever-evolving hospitality landscape. The hospitality sector not only offers diverse career opportunities but also plays a pivotal role in driving economic growth, with the industry set to contribute USD 11 trillion to the global economy by 2033.
By bridging the gap between education and employment, initiatives like these align with global efforts to enhance employability and industry-driven learning. SEGi’s commitment to equipping students with practical knowledge and professional exposure reinforces its role as a leader in producing highly skilled graduates ready for international career opportunities.
As the demand for hospitality professionals continues to surge, SEGi remains dedicated to empowering students with the skills, knowledge, and industry connections necessary to excel. The journey to a successful career starts with the right foundation, and SoHTM ensures that its students are always one step ahead in a highly competitive global industry.
