This Event Gave Single Moms More Than Just a New Look

On 12 April 2025, SEGi hosted Radiant Moms: Celebrating Strength, a heartwarming event dedicated to honouring and uplifting B40 single mothers. Organised by the SHE Club in collaboration with Penang Women’s Development Corporation, Mary Kay, Redo, Aspen, Georgetown Pharmacy, Peak Fitness, and De Villa Spa & Relax, the event took place at Wisma Sri Pinang II and welcomed 30 to 40 participants from both the college and wider public community.

More than just a makeover session, the event was a deeply moving celebration of resilience, dignity, and self-worth. Single mothers were treated to personalised grooming, practical makeup tutorials, and wardrobe styling — curated to celebrate their strength as they balance the roles of caregiver, breadwinner, and nurturer. The highlight of the morning was an empowering catwalk session, where these inspiring women radiated confidence and joy as they proudly took the stage in a moment that was entirely their own.

While the mothers embraced self-care, their children were cared for by compassionate students from SEGi College Penang’s Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE) programme. The children prepared surprise artworks for their mothers, presented at the end of the event — a gesture that brought smiles, hugs, and more than a few happy tears.

This initiative reflected a holistic approach to empowerment — honouring emotional well-being, family connection, and community solidarity. It also showcased how higher education institutions can play a key role in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality, by providing women — particularly those from underserved communities — with platforms for recognition and empowerment. According to UN Women, over 60% of unpaid care work globally is carried out by women, many of whom lack access to mental health, career, and social support systems.

By spotlighting the beauty and strength of these women, and through the compassionate involvement of SEGi students and partners, the event served as a powerful reminder that community engagement is essential to fostering inclusive growth and sustainable futures. Events like Radiant Moms serve not only to uplift but to reaffirm that every individual — regardless of background — deserves to be seen, celebrated, and supported.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):

Gender Equality (SDG 5)

Quality Education (SDG 4)

Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10)
