This Buka Puasa Was Run by Students – and It Was Flawless

SEGi embraced the spirit of Ramadan with a heartfelt Buka Puasa gathering on 5 March 2025 at Gurney Bay Hotel, uniting students, staff, and families in a celebration that was as meaningful as it was memorable. The event exemplified not only community and cultural appreciation, but also the college’s commitment to experiential learning through its Industry-in-Classroom initiative, where students actively apply classroom skills in real-world hospitality settings.

SEGi College Penang’s Hospitality and Culinary Arts students took the lead in orchestrating a seamless and engaging evening. From managing banquet operations to preparing and serving traditional favourites like Penang Fried Kuey Teow and Malaysian Satay, the event was an immersive hands-on experience. These activities helped students sharpen technical and professional skills essential for future careers in hospitality, service, and culinary industries.

The importance of such practical learning is underscored by the World Economic Forum’s emphasis on skills-based education as a driver of youth employability and future-readiness. By simulating real service environments, students not only gain confidence but also cultivate qualities such as empathy, attention to detail, and teamwork—qualities essential for thriving in customer-facing industries.

Beyond the practical benefits, the gathering promoted cultural inclusivity and social unity. In a time when connection and empathy are more important than ever, initiatives like this build bridges between diverse communities, offering students a valuable space to reflect on gratitude, respect, and shared humanity. The partnership with Gurney Bay Hotel further reinforced how academic and industry collaboration can enhance educational experiences with lasting social impact.

This Buka Puasa gathering was a celebration of learning, cultural appreciation, and human connection. It highlighted how hospitality education, when fused with values and real-world application, can empower students to serve not only professionally, but meaningfully.
