They Thought It Was Just an Art Class—Then Everything Changed!

SEGi College Penang recently hosted the Brush & Flourish: Calligraphy Writing Workshop, an enriching experience where students and staff explored the art and tradition of Chinese calligraphy. Held on 12 February 2025, the workshop was designed to introduce participants to the intricate techniques of brush writing while fostering creativity, mindfulness, and cultural appreciation.

Guided by Lee, Programme Leader cum Lecturer from the School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, participants learned the proper use of calligraphy brushes, ink control, and the formation of Chinese characters. Beyond technique, the session highlighted the cultural significance of calligraphy, a revered art form with over 3,000 years of history. Calligraphy is not only a means of expression but also a practice that promotes focus, patience, and emotional well-being. According to Harvard Medical School, engaging in mindful artistic activities like calligraphy can reduce stress levels by up to 30%.

The hands-on experience allowed participants to express their creativity while immersing themselves in cultural heritage. Studies from the World Economic Forum (WEF) show that integrating arts and culture into education enhances cognitive function, creativity, and emotional intelligence, preparing individuals for success in both academic and professional fields. By offering students access to traditional art forms, this workshop contributed to holistic learning and skill development.

Beyond personal enrichment, the event also promoted sustainability and cultural preservation. Calligraphy remains an important symbol of identity and tradition, reinforcing the importance of valuing and safeguarding heritage practices for future generations. UNESCO recognises traditional art preservation as a key factor in sustainable cultural development, ensuring that diverse histories continue to shape modern societies.

Workshops like these enhance community engagement by creating inclusive, interactive learning experiences. With students and staff from diverse backgrounds participating, the event reinforced cross-cultural appreciation and unity within the college environment. Research from the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) indicates that initiatives promoting cultural understanding contribute to stronger, more inclusive institutions and societies.

SEGi continues to integrate experiential learning with cultural exploration, ensuring that students are equipped with knowledge beyond textbooks. By blending art, history, and skill-building, the Brush & Flourish workshop proved to be more than just an art session—it was a step towards preserving tradition, fostering creativity, and strengthening community bonds.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 4: Quality Education
SDG 10: Reduced Inequality
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
