SEGi students recently stepped into a role of meaningful service by volunteering at the World Parkinson’s Day COEX event held on 12 April 2025 at Kilang Besi. Organised by Chloe Teng Sok Ching, President of the Penang Parkinson Rehabilitation Association, the event gathered over 50 participants from the general public with a powerful purpose: to raise awareness about Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and highlight the crucial support available through NGOs for individuals living with the condition.
The event featured moving sharings by neurologist Dr Tan Kenny, a sub-specialist in Parkinson and Movement Disorders from Loh Guan Lye, and Ms Chen, a Parkinson’s fighter who showcased her remarkable paintings as a testament to resilience through art. Their stories brought to light the daily challenges faced by PD fighters and the critical importance of empathy, care, and persistent determination in overcoming them.
Volunteering SEGi students took on key responsibilities that ensured the event ran smoothly and safely, from ushering participants and assisting those with mobility challenges to performing translation duties. Their active participation not only demonstrated compassion and professionalism but also embodied the spirit of leadership and community care that SEGi instils in its students.
According to the World Health Organization, neurological disorders are the leading cause of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and the second leading cause of death globally. Parkinson’s Disease alone affects more than 10 million people worldwide. Events like this not only raise public understanding but also foster greater societal inclusion and support for those battling neurological conditions.
The initiative also strengthens the link between quality education and social responsibility, as called for by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. By engaging directly with vulnerable communities, students gain real-world skills and compassion, preparing them to become advocates for inclusive healthcare and lifelong learning within their future professional landscapes.
The successful involvement of SEGi students at World Parkinson’s Day COEX is a proud reflection of SEGi College Penang’s commitment to shaping well-rounded, socially responsible graduates who are ready to make an impact wherever they go.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3)
Quality Education (SDG 4)
Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10)
