SEGi College Penang’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management recently hosted the exciting Twist and Sip: Pasta Mixology Competition on 17 April 2024. Organised under the TEM3114N Event Project Management course led by Muhamad Irfan bin Bustaipo, the event brought together aspiring chefs and mixologists, showcasing their creativity, skills, and passion. This thrilling culinary showdown featured a variety of delectable pasta dishes and tantalizing mocktails, celebrating the art of culinary fusion and experimentation.
The competition, supported by industry partners Prangin Mall, Daily Coffee, The Tables Penang Café, and Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm, highlighted SEGi College Penang’s commitment to providing students with real-world experience and engagement with industry leaders. This initiative aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), by fostering practical learning and professional development opportunities for students.
Participants, all Diploma in Hotel Management students, mesmerised the audience and judges with a diverse array of mouthwatering creations. From classic spaghetti carbonara to inventive fusion pasta with an Indian twist, the competition celebrated a rich tapestry of flavours and culinary techniques. The mocktail category was equally impressive, with imaginative blends that tantalised the taste buds, ranging from refreshing citrus infusions to exotic fruit medleys.
A panel of esteemed judges, including Chef Thomas (General Secretary of the Penang Chef Association), Chef Ridzuan Kamil (Owner of The Tables Penang), and Chef Shahrul (Head Chef of Daily Café), had the challenging task of selecting the winners. After intense deliberation, Low Chin Wen and Sherlvyn Kok Zhinqi emerged victorious with their Buttermilk Chicken Pasta with a Malaysian Twist and Strawberry Soda Mocktail. The winners received Daily Coffee Cash Vouchers worth RM200, The Table Penang Cash Vouchers worth RM200, and two entrance tickets to Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm.
