Seeing Clearly in a Digital World: SEGi’s Eye-Care Tech Talk

Screens are everywhere — from morning classes to late-night assignments, our eyes hardly get a break. For many students and educators, that means sore eyes, blurry vision, and fatigue have quietly become part of daily life. But should we accept this as the new normal?

On 23 July 2025, the Department of Information Technology at SEGi College Penang, together with the Tic Tech Toe Club, said “no” to that question. They hosted an IT Tech Talk titled “Transformation of Eye Care in the Digital Era,” where students and staff explored how technology can be both the cause of eye strain — and the solution.

The session was led by Ms Jacelin Lim, CEO of Open Vision Technology S/B, a 3D Eye Fitness Expert and the founder of the My3D Eye Fitness Program under the My3D Madani initiative. With her unique blend of innovation and passion, Jacelin introduced the audience to a future where 3D visuals, Virtual Reality (VR), and smart devices are more than just entertainment — they are tools for protecting and strengthening our vision.

Drawing from years of experience in AR/VR solutions, she unpacked the ways we can train our eyes, prevent long-term damage, and make wellness part of our digital routines. For students who often spend hours staring at screens, and for educators managing both teaching and admin work online, the insights struck close to home.

What made the talk stand out was its focus on accessibility. Beyond awareness, Jacelin emphasised how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives can make eye-care innovations available to everyone. This aligns perfectly with SEGi’s broader commitment to not just educate, but also champion sustainable, community-focused solutions.

To cement this vision, SEGi announced a special CSR package for staff under the nationwide 5-Year National Vision Protection Project (2025–2030), extending eye wellness programmes and preventive solutions across Malaysia.

This initiative is more than just about eyesight — it’s about well-being, education, and innovation. It supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being, by tackling digital eye strain as a modern health challenge, and complements SEGi’s mission to foster healthier learning environments for the future.
