Resilience Training Workshop Receives High Praise

SEGi College Penang’s Diploma in Psychology students recently showcased their commitment to community engagement and practical learning by conducting a wellness resilience workshop at Methodist Boys School, Georgetown. This event, led by Psychology lecturer Thanesvary, was part of the Positive Psychology module’s industry in-classroom initiative. The workshop aimed to enhance the well-being and resilience of 60 lower and upper secondary students through hands-on intervention activities.

The 2-hour Wellness Resilience Training Workshop was meticulously designed by the students, who divided themselves into three groups, each focusing on different aspects of positive psychology. Inside the school hall, the first group’s station used rotation-based learning with engaging games like cup stacking and card matching to teach mindfulness, resilience, and self-efficacy. This approach ensured an interactive and enjoyable learning experience that reinforced the importance of wellness in education.

The second group’s “The Cup Challenge” activity addressed developmental assets that foster positive emotions and healthy peer relationships. In this team-based challenge, students had to complete tasks without spilling water from a cup, promoting teamwork and resilience. This innovative activity not only enhanced the students’ problem-solving skills but also highlighted the significance of working together to overcome obstacles, aligning with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

The third group focused on resilience through creative expression, providing students with pebbles and colour markers for a painting activity. This station emphasised emotional expression, communication, and problem-solving through arts and crafts, demonstrating the therapeutic benefits of creative activities. The hands-on nature of this exercise reinforced the students’ understanding of resilience in a supportive and nurturing environment.

Teachers and counsellors at Methodist Boys School also participated in the workshop, further enriching the experience. The educators’ involvement ensured that the intervention techniques could be integrated into the school’s ongoing support for students’ mental well-being. The event received high praise from a group of licensed counsellors led by Jenny, highlighting the effectiveness and impact of the workshop.

SEGi presented participating students with notebooks as a token of appreciation, further cementing the positive relationship between the college and the school community. This initiative not only provided SEGi students with valuable practical experience but also significantly contributed to the well-being of the Methodist Boys School students, fostering a sense of community and shared learning.

SEGi’s dedication to applying classroom knowledge in real-world settings exemplifies its commitment to educational excellence and community service. By integrating the principles of positive psychology and resilience into their teaching methods, SEGi continues to promote holistic education that prepares students to make meaningful contributions to society. This workshop is a testament to SEGi’s ongoing efforts to align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in promoting quality education and well-being.
