Psychology Students Support Dementia Care In Penang

SEGi College Penang continues to make impactful strides in community engagement and social responsibility through the involvement of its psychology students in initiatives that support individuals with dementia. Tracing the inception of memory cafes back to the Netherlands in the 1990s, these supportive settings have provided invaluable opportunities for individuals with dementia and their caregivers to engage in social interactions, exchange experiences, and access essential information and support services. This global concept has successfully expanded to Malaysia, significantly enhancing the quality of life for many.

SEGi’s psychology students participated in the “Better Posture Exercise for Frozen Shoulder and Back Pain Session” organised by Health Happiness Network and D’Home Pulau Pinang. This event exemplified SEGi’s commitment to fostering meaningful intergenerational interactions and cultivating a sense of social responsibility among its students. By engaging with the elderly affected by dementia, students not only gained practical experience but also developed empathy and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by marginalised communities.

This initiative aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). By promoting health and well-being through such community-oriented programmes, SEGi actively contributes to reducing health disparities and enhancing the quality of life for vulnerable populations. The participation of psychology students in these sessions underscores SEGi’s dedication to providing a holistic education that prepares students to make positive societal contributions.

The “Better Posture Exercise for Frozen Shoulder and Back Pain Session” offered a platform for SEGi students to interact directly with individuals affected by dementia, fostering an environment of mutual learning and support. These interactions not only benefited the elderly participants by improving their physical well-being but also enriched the students’ educational experience, reinforcing the importance of community service and intergenerational solidarity.

SEGi’s collaboration with Health Happiness Network and D’Home Pulau Pinang highlights the institution’s proactive approach to addressing societal issues through partnerships. These collaborations enable students to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, promoting a hands-on learning experience that is both impactful and transformative. Such initiatives are integral to SEGi’s mission of nurturing socially responsible graduates equipped to address diverse communities’ needs.

The success of this event is a testament to SEGi’s ongoing efforts to integrate community engagement into its educational programmes. By participating in activities that support individuals with dementia, SEGi students are not only enhancing their professional competencies but also contributing to the creation of a more inclusive and compassionate society. This approach aligns with the broader goals of sustainable development, ensuring that SEGi remains at the forefront of positive change.

Looking ahead, SEGi is committed to expanding its community outreach initiatives, further solidifying its role as a leader in higher education and social responsibility. By continuing to engage students in meaningful projects that support marginalised groups, SEGi ensures that its graduates are not only academically proficient but also socially conscious and ready to make a difference in the world.
