If SEGi College Penang had an official “sunshine” award, Krithiga Gunasegaran would be the undisputed champion. With a radiant smile that could light up a lecture hall and a knack for bringing people together, she was a force of positivity on campus. But Krithiga was more than just a friendly face; she was a high-achieving student with a passion for psychology, driven by a desire to understand the intricacies of human experience.
Krithiga’s journey began with a simple fascination: the “mysterious Pandora’s box” of psychology. The American Degree Programme at SEGi, with its blend of Malaysian and international standards, felt like the perfect key to unlock its secrets. “I wanted to understand why we think, feel, and act the way we do,” she explained, her eyes sparkling with intellectual curiosity. “And I knew I wanted a programme that would truly challenge me.”
But Krithiga wasn’t just a scholar. She was a force of nature, a leader who understood the importance of creating a vibrant campus experience. “Leadership isn’t just about titles,” she asserted, “it’s about connecting with people, understanding their needs, and creating a supportive community.”
As President of the Student Representative Council (SRC), she spearheaded initiatives that transformed the campus into a hub of activity. Mini food festivals, “rest and chill” zones, and vibrant cultural celebrations became hallmarks of her tenure. But it wasn’t just about fun and games. Krithiga also fostered an entrepreneurial spirit, encouraging students to showcase their small businesses and collaborate on events.
“I wanted to balance academic life with the vibrant student life essential to campus experience,” she said. “It’s about creating a holistic environment where students can thrive.”
Her motivation stemmed from a desire to seize opportunities she missed in secondary school. “SEGi Penang felt like a fresh start,” she revealed. “A chance to pursue those passions I’d always held.”
The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Balancing the demands of leadership with academic rigour required meticulous time management and a strong support system. “We were all students first and foremost,” she emphasised. “Regular meetings, often late into the evening, became crucial. It was truly a team effort.”
Building support for their initiatives also proved challenging. But Krithiga and her team focused on building genuine connections, especially with freshers. “Through orientations and initial events, we prioritised getting to know them on a personal level,” she explained. “Those early connections proved invaluable.”
Her dedication paid off. Krithiga maintained an impressive 3.7 GPA while leading the SRC and emceeing major events like SEGi College Penang Graduation Day and the Lights in Georgetown Mid-Autumn Lantern Charity Walk. “Time, breaks, and limits,” she advised, sharing her secret to balancing it all. “It’s about prioritising, managing your time effectively, and knowing when to say no.”
Her passion for public speaking stemmed from a desire to connect with people and create positive experiences. “I realised they weren’t just talking, they were crafting an experience, managing the energy of the room, and making everyone feel involved,” she said, her eyes lighting up.
Her most memorable events were the SEGi College Penang Graduation Ceremony, a familiar friend that evolved with her hosting style, and the student orientation ice-breakers, a whirlwind of spontaneity and connection.
Now, in her final term, Krithiga is delving into the intersection of self-esteem and authentic leadership, a topic that resonates deeply with her own experiences. “Self-esteem is the foundation of leadership,” she explained. “I want to understand how it shapes an individual’s capacity to lead authentically.”
Looking ahead, Krithiga envisions a future filled with practical experience, further studies in forensic psychology, and a career where she can make a meaningful contribution. “I’m both excited and nervous to see where my journey takes me,” she admitted, “but I’m confident that I’ll find a path that aligns with my values.”
Reflecting on her time at SEGi, Krithiga emphasised the importance of balance, community, and personal growth. “It’s been a rollercoaster, a journey of growth, and a collection of unforgettable memories,” she said.
“College is a place for both academic and personal development. Choose your friends wisely, embrace the challenges, and remember that these experiences are what make your journey unique.”
Krithiga’s story is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and the unwavering pursuit of balance. She’s not just a student; she’s an architect of experience, building a foundation for a future where she can inspire and empower others.
