Innovating for Sustainability: SEGi Students Triumph at NVICC 2025

SEGi College Penang has once again demonstrated its commitment to innovation and excellence as its students achieved remarkable success at the National Virtual Innovation Creation Competition (NVICC) 2025. This national competition provides a platform for young innovators to present creative and sustainable solutions to real-world challenges through technology. SEGi College Penang submitted its entries on 31 August 2025, with the official results announced on 15 October 2025.

Representing the institution were three final-year students from the Diploma in Information Technology programme – Calvin Ng, Cheong Kai Qi and Lee Kai Min – all competing under the Green Technology category. Their projects not only showcased technical proficiency but also reflected a strong commitment to sustainability and digital innovation, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Calvin Ng secured the Gold Medal with his project, Donar Link (GT034) – a Blood Donation and Emergency Health Response System. Developed using Android, Firebase Cloud Services and Google Maps API, the system connects donors, NGOs, hospitals and administrators on a single digital platform. With features such as event scheduling and gamification to encourage donor engagement.

Cheong Kai Qi earned the Silver Medal for eShuttle SEGi (GT032), a digital solution aimed at improving the college’s shuttle van service. Replacing manual WhatsApp messaging, the application enables drivers to receive real-time updates while allowing students to track routes and schedules with ease. This initiative promotes smarter mobility on campus.

Also awarded a Silver Medal, Lee Kai Min developed TriDence Smart Rental System (GT033) – a mobile-based residential parking management system. Built using Firebase for real-time functionality, the system replaces manual logbooks, reduces errors and optimises parking usage, contributing to more efficient and sustainable living environments.

The NVICC 2025 emphasises innovation, sustainability and practical technological solutions for community and industry challenges. The success of SEGi College Penang’s students is a testament to the institution’s strong academic foundation and its dedication to nurturing creative, industry-ready graduates who are prepared to drive technological advancement in Malaysia and beyond.
