Innovating for a Sustainable Future: Empowering Students to Drive Technological Advancement

On 22nd October 2024, SEGi College Penang demonstrated its commitment to fostering innovation by participating in the Technology Innovation Competition (TechIC) 2024 at Dewan Seri Mutiara, Politeknik Seberang Perai. This event provided a platform for students to showcase projects aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly focusing on green innovation and digital interactivity.

One notable project, spearheaded by students Lam Yong Qin and Kiven Raj a/l Saravan, aimed to revolutionise Malaysia’s healthcare system through a digital health monitoring system. This initiative integrates sustainable practices, contributing to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by promoting accessible healthcare solutions.

Another innovative endeavour, led by Lim Jian Feng in collaboration with Lee Kai Min, introduced an interactive mobile learning platform tailored for the education sector. By combining gaming elements with digital tools, this project enhances student engagement in database subjects, addressing SDG 4: Quality Education, which advocates for inclusive and equitable quality education.

Competing in the Open Category against participants from various institutions, both SEGi teams secured Silver Medals in the Higher Education Category. This achievement underscores the institution’s dedication to excellence and its alignment with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by fostering resilient infrastructure and promoting inclusive industrialisation.

The competition offered participants the opportunity to present their ideas and prototypes to a panel of esteemed judges from industry and academia. Such exposure is invaluable, igniting interest in technology among students and providing a platform to develop practical skills, thereby enhancing their readiness for real-world challenges.

SEGi extends its heartfelt gratitude to IT lecturers Anis Nazhirah binti Mohd Zahari, Mohd Amizar bin Abdul Majid, and Ts. Mohd Zulkifli Mohd Zaki for their unwavering guidance throughout the research and development process. Their mentorship was instrumental in the success of both teams, reflecting the institution’s commitment to SDG 4 by ensuring quality education through dedicated teaching.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being

  • SDG 4: Quality Education

  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
