SEGi business and digital marketing students had an insightful field trip to Digital Penang, a government-linked company leading Penang’s digital transformation. Located in the heritage building of Wisma Yeap Chor Ee, Digital Penang welcomed students and staff warmly, offering a deep dive into the state’s digital economy, smart city initiatives, and startup ecosystem.
During the session, Satnam Kaur, Director of Operations, shared how Digital Penang is enabling the state’s transition into a fully digital city. One of its standout initiatives was the Thaipusam chariot tracking app, which helped thousands of devotees navigate the festival seamlessly. Digital Penang also conducts digital clinic workshops, equipping individuals and businesses with skills to thrive in the digital economy. With Penang advancing towards a cashless society, the organisation is actively supporting startups, offering funding, incubators, and grants to accelerate digital innovation.
Students engaged in an interactive Q&A session, where they gained valuable insights on entrepreneurship and startup growth from Digital Penang’s Head of Startup, Lee. The discussion sparked interest, leading several students to express keen participation in an upcoming poster competition. The visit also introduced students to internship opportunities, where Digital Penang offers a competitive RM1,000 monthly allowance, making it an attractive learning experience.
Beyond business and digital strategies, the trip exposed students to real-world applications of innovation and infrastructure development. According to the World Bank, digital economies can boost GDP growth by up to 20% in emerging markets. By witnessing how government-backed initiatives drive economic and technological progress, students gained first-hand knowledge of the evolving digital landscape and how businesses can align with it.
The visit also included a tour of Penang Science Cluster, where students explored interactive digital props and emerging technologies. Immersing themselves in industry-driven learning, they saw how STEM, digital marketing, and business strategy converge to shape future economies. Studies by UNESCO highlight that hands-on learning enhances cognitive retention by 75%, reinforcing the importance of experiential education in preparing future professionals.
This collaboration between SEGi College Penang and Digital Penang reflects a commitment to bridging education with industry. By equipping students with digital knowledge, entrepreneurial insights, and real-world exposure, the visit empowered them to adapt, innovate, and contribute to Malaysia’s digital economy. As Penang moves towards becoming a smart city, such initiatives ensure that students are future-ready, industry-aware, and positioned for success.
