From Heritage to Innovation: CEO Jonathan Inspires Future Entrepreneurs at SEGi

The scent of freshly brewed coffee lingered in the air, but the real takeaway at SEGi College Penang wasn’t just a cup — it was a lesson in entrepreneurship. In collaboration with JCI United Penang and SBK Coffee Concept Store, students had the rare opportunity to learn directly from Jonathan Chan, CEO of SBK Coffee Sin Boon Kee and the 4th-generation successor of one of Penang’s most iconic 80-year-old coffee brands.

Jonathan’s story was one of balance — carrying the weight of heritage while daring to innovate. He shared how he transformed a traditional family business into a thriving brand fit for modern markets, all while staying true to its roots. From developing creative strategies to navigating the intense competition of the F&B industry, his journey was a masterclass in resilience and reinvention.

What made the session stand out was Jonathan’s openness in breaking down entrepreneurship into real, practical lessons for students:

  • How to adapt tradition through innovation to meet modern demands.

  • The leadership mindset needed to steer a family legacy into the future.

  • Survival skills for staying competitive in a fast-changing, globalised economy.

The most memorable moment came when Jonathan rolled up his sleeves and demonstrated the brewing of Hor Ka Sai — a beloved local favourite blending Nanyang coffee with Milo. More than a drink, it became a symbol of his philosophy: the perfect blend of tradition and creativity.

At SEGi College Penang, learning extends beyond textbooks. Sessions like these transform classrooms into experiential learning hubs, where students don’t just study business models — they absorb wisdom, stories, and skills from leaders who have lived them.

This initiative is also closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 4: Quality Education – by equipping students with first-hand skills and mentorship.

  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – by inspiring pathways to meaningful careers and entrepreneurial ventures.

  • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure – by showing how heritage businesses can thrive through innovative strategies for the future.
