Fighting Climate Change One Plastic Bottle at a Time

In tribute to World Environment Day 2025, SEGi took the lead in a bold, hands-on initiative to raise environmental consciousness among youth and the wider community. In collaboration with Hompton by the Beach Penang, the “Waves of Change Beach Clean-up” was more than a symbolic act — it was a powerful statement about shared responsibility and the urgent need to protect our ecosystems where land and sea collide.

Though this year’s global theme focused on “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” the clean-up initiative highlighted the essential link between terrestrial and marine environments. Coastlines are not only biodiversity hotspots, but also the first line of defence against climate change and pollution. By cleaning the shorelines, participants were directly contributing to the health of both land and ocean — two systems deeply intertwined.

The United Nations estimates that over 11 million metric tonnes of plastic waste enter the ocean each year, threatening marine life, food chains, and coastal livelihoods. Beyond the physical debris, such pollution degrades soil and water quality, disrupts food systems, and exacerbates climate impacts. Initiatives like the Waves of Change are essential in reversing this tide — combining education, community action, and sustainability into a single impactful experience.

The clean-up was also a catalyst for conversation among SEGi College Penang’s hospitality and tourism students about sustainable tourism, civic engagement, and environmental responsibility. The involvement of students, staff, and hotel partners showcased how industry and education can unite in meaningful climate action — a model of the kind of leadership needed in every sector to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

This event is a continuation of SEGi’s broader mission to produce graduates who are not only professionally capable, but globally conscious — ready to contribute to sustainable development and drive meaningful change in their communities and industries.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities

SDG 13 – Climate Action

SDG 14 – Life Below Water
